soda can calculations cokecan.jpg (4961 bytes)

Here's a little optimization problem for calculus students.

What are the dimensions of a can (cylinder) designed to hold 12 fluid ounces of soda pop and have minimum surface area? Why would a company want to minimize surface area? Compare your results with the actual dimensions of a standard soda can. What do you find? What other factors do you think determine the size of a soda can?
