Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
This year we will be doing a major project in our math class. Students will be solving problems in depth and presenting them to their peers. Students have enjoyed this project very much in past years and it greatly enriches their learning experiences. Participation in this project will be essential for your student’s success.
Students will be working individually and in small groups. In their presentations, students will demonstrate that they have mastered a problem using a variety of techniques. Through presentations, interviews, pictures, project journals, reflective writing, peer critique, and videotape, I hope to record the progress of your student’s learning. My goal is to capture students’ voices and learning through reflective practice, a framework for learning that my colleagues and I have found motivating and effective.
Your student’s learning, and that of the entire class, is something that I will share with other educators throughout the year. This project was designed with a grant I received from the Claremont Graduate University after completing my master’s degree in mathematics. As part of my development as a professional educator, I plan to present evidence of my students’ learning to my peers locally, at professional meetings, and at state and national conferences.
I need your permission to include your student’s work, voice, image, and name in this project since it will be shared with educators outside of the San Dieguito Union High School District community. If you would like to see samples of the types of work we will do or would like some more information, please browse my web site (www.abbymath.com), make a note on the permission slip below, or contact me at school. Thank you for including your student in this project. It will be fun and rewarding for all of us. I have really enjoyed meeting all of my students during the first few weeks of school. I look forward to working with them throughout this year.
Sincerely,
Abigail S. Brown
