Torrey Pines High School Music Boosters
Torrey Pines High School Music Boosters supports and promotes the music program at Torrey Pines through fundraising, volunteer support, and outreach. The music program at Torrey Pines is relatively young. The program started in 1999 after a gap of several years during which the music programs throughout the San Dieguito Union High School District were lost. Due to budget constraints, the music program gets no funding from the district other than teacher salaries. Our coaching budget from the district was cut from $5,000 to zero this year. The program has been able to rebuild from scratch—building its music library, acquiring instruments and equipment—with the support of parent donations to the music program. Parent donations also allow the program to cover the recurring costs of transportation, facilities rental fees, festival fees, artists-in residence, and instrument repairs.
The music program at Torrey Pines has grown through the years and become highly successful. Many factors have contributed to this success including the many strong feeder elementary and middle school programs. Music is one of the most expensive programs offered in secondary schools. The annual budget for the TPHS music program is between $35,000 to $40,000, yet none of that is covered by the district. That is why financial support from parents is so crucial to maintaining the quality of the music instruction that students at TPHS receive.
