Student Responsibility:

The following policies have been developed with students in mind!
They are designed to keep you organized and to maintain your growing sense of responsibility.
Being a student is a learning process.  We want to facilitate that process and encourage you to be responsible for your daily assignments and for your own learning.  Your success is our primary interest!

"Optional--not required" Classroom Supplies:  Please bring the following to class every day:

  • 3-ring binder for history (may be part of a larger notebook)

  • 2 dividers labeled WH Course Handouts, WH Notes & Activities

  • blueor black and red pens

  • set of colored pencils

  • notebook paper

  • an additional 1½" or 2" binder with dividers for ongoing creation of a portfolio (to be used for mid-term and final)

    • Portfolio divider labels for US history:  U.S. Geography, Colonial America, U.S. Constitution, New Nation, The North and South, Westward Expansion, Civil War, Industrial America.

Student Work:

Format:

  • All collected work must be completed in blue or black ink, or typed.

  • All student work must have a heading in the upper right corner which includes name, date, class period.

  • All student work must have an assigned roll book number in the upper left corner.

  • All student work must have the assignment title centered on the top line of the paper.

Late Work Policies:

  • Homework assignments are due on the assigned date.  Late work will not be accepted without a DOG (Day of Grace).

  • Long-term projects are also due on the assigned date.  However, because of the weight on the student’s grade, projects will be accepted late according to the following policy.

    • The project will be assessed for quality then marked down a full grade for each day it is late.  After three days, the project can receive a maximum of ½ credit.

Absence Policy:

Absences create issues that often affect a student’s progress and grade.  These issues include missing important class activities and discussions, and neglecting to follow through with appropriate procedures after an absence.  It is the student’s responsibility to follow through on absence procedures.

I understand that trips are very often an educational experience.  However, as much of my history program depends on in-class experience-based activities, much of the work is impossible to make up (and students may not receive credit for these types of activities).  For that reason, I encourage you to schedule trips around school
holidays.

To encourage attendance, the history department’s policy for unexcused absences is as follows:

1.  Students will not receive credit for in-class, experiential activities;

2.  I will not create alternate assignments to be completed in lieu of in-class     activities.

3.  For work that may be provided, students will receive only partial credit after the work is completed.

Procedures after an Absence:

1.      Turn in assignments that were checked or collected during your absence;

2.      Go to the World History board to get any handouts and assignments given during your absence.  See me for more in-depth explanation or if any notes/tests/quizzes were missed.

3.       Turn in missed assignments by the due date we agree upon*Please note:  Missed assignments that are not received in a timely manner will not be accepted and will receive a zero.

*Please note:  Late work after an absence is not accepted.  If the above due dates are not met, assignments will receive a zero.

Test Make-Up:

If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you will have one week from the day the test is given to make it up.  Please see me as soon as you return to schedule a make up time.  Special arrangements may be made due to a prolonged absence.

Cheating:

The History Department stands behind the school policy: cheating of any kind will not be tolerated.
Students who copy another’s work AND students who allow their work to be copied will receive a zero on that assignment or test and will be referred to administration.

Grade Policy:

I use a standard point system. Students are kept updated on their grade every two to three weeks. If you would like an update on your child’s academic progress, you may access his or her grades through the Aeries Parent Portal at https://parent.sduhsd.net/abi/.  If you have a question about the Parent Portal, you may contact Shirley Blekeberg at 858-755-1558 x4410 or by email at shirley.blekeberg@sduhsd.net.
