ETHICS AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Doctoring photographs has been around almost as long as photography itself, but as digital imaging hardware and software has both advanced and come down in price, the practice of digital image manipulation has become much more commonplace and faked photos are becoming harder to detect. In fact, digital photo manipulation -- commonly referred to as 'photoshopping' -- has recently become a popular pastime, and many consider this photographic fakery to be a new art form. But when it works its way into photojournalism and the media, the issue of ethics comes to the forefront. How far can we take digital image manipulation and still maintain photographic integrity?

Week of September 5:

Lesson:  Elements of Design and Composition: How to create photographs instead of snap-shots.

A “snapshot” can be taken of anything and of varying quality (composition, exposure, etc.) Usually a “snapshot” is a quick rough capture to document a scene or event.

A “photograph” on the other hand is a well thought, composed, exposed and executed art form.

The next time you look at an image think to yourself, “Is this a photograph or a snapshot?”. Over time you might see the differentiation and it might just impact how you approach capturing a scene.

Lesson: Introduction to the Color Wheel

A color wheel is a diagram that maps colors by their relationship to the other colors on the circle. While colors that are related to each other are placed side-by-side, complementary colors (colors that are inversely related to each other) are put on directly opposite sides of the color wheel.

In the color wheel, red, yellow and blue are considered primary colors while orange, green and purple are secondary colors.

Week of October 17:  Portrait Photography

Portrait photography - or portraiture - is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people (a group portrait), in which the face and expression is predominant. The objective is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the subject. Like other types of portraiture, the focus of the photograph is the person's face, although the entire body and the background may be included. A portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often, but not always, shows a person looking directly at the camera.

Here is another Shadow exercise that
will challenge your skills!!

Adding Shadow

Nov. 2nd: Introduction to Photoshop
Not too long ago, we learned how photo manipulation in photojournalism can be used to misinform the public, to influence public perceptions and even to exacerbate conflicts around the world. The vast majority of the class came to the following conclusion: Manipulating photographs in order to sway the opinion and perceptions of the public - lying to the public - is unethical.
But what about just for fun; for our own personal use? Wouldn't it be fun to take a photo in one place, and make it look like you're somewhere else?

Two Birds
RAIN DAY, Dec. 12:

Photoshop Tips and Tricks #2:

Occasionally, you will be asked to photograph an object that is not exactly what the client has requested. For example, your client wants you to photograph a green Lamborghini for an upcoming ad, however, you can only locate an orange one. Photoshop makes it easy to change the color to please your client...

Color Modifications with Masks and Brushes

When you are finished with the Lamborghini, you are to either take a new photo, find a photo that you may have taken earlier, or search Google Images to find a suitable photo that you can modify the color of part of the image, much as you did with the Lamborghini. When you are satisfied with the modifications, save the file as a .jpg, then save it on a USB Drive and submit.

THIS IS DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD TODAY!
NOTE: You do NOT have to create a PowerPoint for this assignment.

Week of December 5th: Macro Photography

Extreme close-up photography is referred to as macro photography. Anytime you see a super close photo of a fly for instance, or a flower petal, the photographer probably used macro photography techniques to get that gorgeous close up photo.

Spring is an excellent time to observe the "essential qualities and innate disposition" of our surroundings. Seeds from the fall have sprouted, flowers are blooming, and insects such as butterflies and bees are feasting on nectar,  making our lives so much more enjoyable!

Abstract photography can produce very dramatic images. It relies on our more primal sense of form, color, and curves than it does on detail. The problem is that most photographers tend to think in terms of detail when evaluating photographic opportunities. However, it takes a different way of looking at our world to perceive the abstract photography opportunities that surround us.
