The most difficult thing about leaving the crowded, smoggy, and busy Los Angeles area to become a teacher in what was a smallish coastal town down San Diego way was the knowledge that I would probably miss the opportunity to experience the big one.   There is nothing quite as impressive as a temblor that can raise a whole mountain range several feet.
