Areas that are blue and purple represent areas where the surface level of the pacific is lower than normal. Red and white represent higher elevations. Lower (blue) levels are associated with pockets of cooler water (evaporative cooling mixed with less than normal percipitation?)
While the following is not technically "surf" related, it is very interesting. Marine topography can be revealed by satellite imagery.
