Wood One/Two
SDA woodworking is taught with the premise that a student needs to experience success in order to enjoy woodworking. With this in mind power tools are explored first and foremost which is the reverse of many training facilities. For most students, hand tools are more difficult to master. Students learn the basics of squaring stock from rough lumber to create their first project.. This project was carefully chosen to cover all of the basic milling processes required for most woodworking endeavors.
Required One Project
The required project for wood one is a shaker clock.
Most students find this project teaches skills required to pursue future projects they are interested in making. If you are attracted to skating, it is possible to work concurrently on
skateboards or other skate related projects as a side project. In other words, if the required project doesn't excite you remember this; it is designed as a skill builder and you may work on whatever you want on the side.
Required Two Project
Wood two students will have the option of building a project of their own design or use existing plans provided for them.
The supported project is a small night stand that teaches door and drawer construction. It builds on the skills learned in wood one and reinforces a common skill set that must be mastered by students pursuing woodworking as a career. Many former students attend Palomar College to refine the skills introduced at the high school level. A link for Palomar is provided to the right. As you can see they have an extensive curriculum and many areas of focus.
Facilities
The facilities at San Dieguito Academy have a long history of serving local students for many generations.
Many of the machines have served the community since the 1970's and are bulletproof industrial models. Other more modern machines have been introduced as the need arises. For example, Saw-Stop table saws were added the year they were introduced to protect students from injury. The shop includes: Two 24" Oliver planers, two Saw Stop 10" table-saws, one 14" powermatic table-saw, one 12" Oliver jointer, one 8" Delta jointer, two 14" laguna band saws, one 24" Do-All band saw, and many other supporting woodworking tools. These machines provide a complete woodworking experience.
Final Thoughts
Woodworking is a worth while pursuit that can be enjoyed by all ages. Not only can it be a career, it can also be a a life long hobby with endless possibilities. A skilled woodworker can build his/her own furniture, perform home improvement tasks, craft gifts, pursue money making opportunities such as furniture refinishing, guitar making, kitchen cabinet fabricator, cabinet installer, teacher, tool sales, etc.
