Frequently Asked Questions (contact Lccsurfteam@gmail.com for more info)

  1. I play another sport, can I still do Surf Team?

Yes. Many of our surfers play multiple sports. The SSS season often lasts from September through April so these athletes are able to attend Surf Team events during certain times of the season.

  2. I play another sport and can't come to practice, can I still surf in the contests?

Maybe. It is very competitive to get on the contest roster and priority is given to surfers who perform well at practices. Come to the contests to show your dedication, cheer on the team, and be ready to jump in as an alternate.

  3. I've never competed before, can I join the Surf Team?

Yes. Coaches will teach you how to compete & will help you improve your surfing / body-boarding skills. Practices are just like the contests. Check out these links: Basic Rules & Competition Hints

  4. I'm a kook, can I be on the Surf Team?

Yes, but members are expected to be strong swimmers, have good surf etiquette, some basic wave knowledge, and some basic skills. Ask coaches for advice on how to improve. Take Surf PE & get out in the water as much as possible.

  5. I already surf NSSA, should I be on the Surf Team?

Yes. The LCC Surf Team will help improve your surfing for both SSS & NSSA. Plus, the LCC Surf Team has a fun team atmosphere and is a good way to connect with other surfers at school. If you end up having 2 contests on the same day, be sure to coordinate closely with coaches as surfers are often able to do both events.

  6. What does the $250 donation pay for?

The $250 donation includes: SSS membership fees and insurance ($40/surfer), entry fees at SSS contests ($5,500), heats and practices, food for events, office supplies, camp gear, cook gear, practice jerseys, equipment, Surf Team Sweatshirts & T-shirts, and our famous end of year Awards Banquet. The donation does not cover enough to pay for everything so we rely on sponsors & fundraisers. Coaches are not paid.

  7. What if I can't pay the $250 donation?

We definitely understand that some families cannot comfortably pay the full amount. Each year, we have a few surfers who are unable to do so.  When this happens, we ask them to pay what they can afford (keeping in mind that the SSS fees per surfer is around $130 and the sweatshirts/shirts cost over $45 per surfer). Luckily, each year we’ve been able to round up cash sponsors to help fill in the budget gaps our team faces. Please let us know if you have a financial hardship, we want you on the team.

  1. What if I know that I can't make it to all the contests, can you cut me a deal?

The LCC Surf Team pays the same SSS fees, etc. whether you come to all the contests & practices or none. See # 6 & #7 above.

  1. How long should my longboard be?
Minimum longboard length is 9 feet or at least 3 feet longer than the height of the surfer.
  1. How short should my shortboard be?
Shortboards must be 7 feet 6 inches or less.

  2. Can I get a Varsity Letter?
Yes, there are 2 ways to get a Varsity Letter. SSS ranks all surfers according to points earned in both the team & individual heats. To get a Varsity Letter you must be ranked in the top 3 from LCC for your division (or the top 9 for Men's Shortboard). Check the SSS website for your current ranking and points. The other way to get a varsity letter is to advance to the finals (get a medal) in an SSS contest.
