Introduction
What have you gotten into with AP Biology?  We'll discuss what you can expect and how you can be successful.  We'll also explore  the recurring themes of biology that are interwoven throughout the course.

Cell Structure

The cell is the basic building block of organisms; whatever structure and function a whole organism displays begins at the cellular level.

Cellular Energetics

The Circle of Life begins here . . ..harvesting the sun's energy and turning it into a usable form.

Cellular Reproduction & Heredity

It all began with a monk and his peas, and further explained by a man and his Drosophila.  They were able to provide the bridge from cellular processes to an organism.  How does an organism reproduce and how does this provide a path to evolution?

Molecular Genetics: "The Central Dogma of Biology"
T
he race to discover the molecular basis of inheritance was won in 1953 by Watson & Crick with their discovery of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid.  This language of life contains the code to direct the development of an organism's chemical, anatomical, physiological and to an extent behavioral characteristics.

Evolutionary Biology
The unifying principle of biology that explains the unity and diversity of life.  Darwin's theory provided biology with a strong, scientific, testable foundation by demonstrating that diversity was a result of natural causes instead of supernatural creation.

Diversity of organisms
The number of organisms that inhabit the earth are astounding and to think that over 99% of them are extinct!  We'll explore the 3 domains and numerous phyla and examine their similarities and differences.  An emphasis will be placed on Structure and Function of Plants & Animals.
