English 9
Spring Break Extra Credit Opportunities
I always encourage taking our study of literature and ideas to a broader level
or perhaps personal level.
Therefore, you have the opportunity of earning a few extra points by completing
one of the following tasks. Yes, you may do more than one! You can do two
options. Each is worth UP TO 20
points.
1)
Lord of the Flies:
Examine a text (book, short story, long poem, etc.), movie, TV show, etc., that
in some way relates to the novel.
Suggestions are listed below. Write
a one-page analysis (handwritten neatly or typed and double-spaced) that
explains the similarities (and perhaps differences) between the novel and the
other material, and that illuminates the greater meaning we can get from
exploring both. Basically, I don’t
want just a list of trite things that are the same or different (although
specific examples are of course necessary for any good discussion); I want some
evidence of good thinking and deeper understanding.
Your analysis and writing should be of the highest quality.
·
The TV show Lost
·
The Simpson’s episode “Das Bus,” from season 9
·
Cast Away
·
Other stories of deserted islands, etc., or even stories not so similar on the
surface but with similar themes!
Whatever you can find, if you can back it up in your writing, it’s fine…
2)
Read
Of Mice and Men, keeping a detailed reading log of plot and
analysis. You can use the novel bank
format if you like: plot/characters/symbols/interesting words (not just vocab
but analysis of style, literary devices, key quotes, etc.), and theme; you can
find it under the LOTF section of my web site). Your
parent/guardian must also write and sign a note saying that they observed you
reading through the book.
