Humanity on Trial:
Express Your Philosophy
We have explored some different views that philosophers (and others) have of human nature. You have had a chance to read about these views, to hear the views of your classmates, and to explore and express your own views. Here you get to synthesize your thoughts and express your current opinion of human nature. Are we basically good, bad, or in-between? Share your view of humanity by completing ONE of the following assignments:
1) Write a letter to Hobbes or Locke explaining why you agree or disagree with him. You must offer specific reasons and clearly explain your view, addressing specifically the view of the philosopher to whom you are writing.
2) Write a poem explaining your view of human nature. You must offer specific reasons and clearly explain your view, although you may choose to do so through poetic devices (such as figurative language, an example situation, symbols, etc.).
3) Write a fable or a parable that expresses your view of human nature. Your fable or parable should clearly present (thought the allegorical characters and storytelling) a view on whether human nature is good, bad, in-between, etc.
Your piece must be ¾ of a page long minimum. Have fun with this assignment!
