With a partner search the links to find a career focused in a mathematics which looks interesting to you.  Do not choose a math teacher or professor.  Use the information you find on these links to find out about what people do in that career field.   Find or create a sample problem and solution that would be used in that career.   You may do this by finding more sights that relate to the career.  Find a contact who can give you more information and send an email to receive more information.    Make sure to keep track of web sites you use and people you contact to use as references.  Your job will be to present your information in a powerpoint presentation and to turn in a written report.

Your powerpoint presentation should include:

  • A title.
  • Your names.
  • The name of the person you contacted, their email address, and the name of their career.
  • General information about the career.
  • A math problem related to the career and a solution.
  • The URL addresses of the websites where you found your information, and any other references you used.
  • Illustrations.
  • Color, neatness, and organization.

A written report should include:

  • Your names.
  • The name of the person you contacted, their email address, and the name of their career.
  • A brief description of your presentation.
  • A copy of the email you sent and any replies you received.  In your email you will want to include background information, including who you are, the school you attend, and information about the project.  You should also include information that you learned in part 1.
  • Each student should write a reflection about the project.    You should include information about what you learned, what you enjoyed, what you didn't enjoy, what you thought was easy, what you thought was difficult, and any changes you would make to your project or the project in general.  Tell what grade you think you deserve and why.
