Possible Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior

à      Severe disruption or behavior will have strict and immediate consequences.

Materials:  You need to bring to class EVERY TIME we meet:

2-3 pencils or a mechanical pencil with lead

1 red, pink, purple, or other colored non-erasable pen (not black or blue and legible)

3 ring binder with paper

graphing calculator

book

homework

acceptable use policy for computer use

Overall Grades

Tests/Quizzes – 65%

Homework/Classwork – 20%

Final – 15%

Grading Scale:  90-100% A; 80-89% B; 70-79% C; 60-69% D; 0-59% F

à      Grades of .5 or higher are rounded up only on semester grades.

Homework

Doing your homework completely is vital to your success in this class.  Make sure you attempt each problem whole-heartedly and that you ask for help on questions you do not understand.   You will have homework everyday we meet and will be due the next meeting day unless otherwise stated.  Each homework should be done in pencil on 3-holed paper (not spiral) and should have your name, date, period, and the assignment.  Homework will be worth 10 points and points will be given based on completeness.  You must show all work to receive credit.  You will have homework quizzes, so make sure to write clearly and write the problem as well as the work for the solution.   Homework must be made up within 2 class periods if you are absent.   One late homework may be turned in per quarter when accompanied by a “sad story (described in class).”  No other late work will be accepted.  You are responsible to write the assignment correctly and to complete the correct questions.

Tests/Quizzes

There will be 4 tests given through the semester on the dates below, which will cover any material from the semester up until that point.  Quizzes will be given periodically.

ª      Test 1:  September 24th

ª      Test 2:  October 23rd

ª      Test 3:  November 20th

ª      Test 4:  December 19th  (Note this test is just prior to Winter Break.  You will need to make arrangements to take the test prior to this date if you are going to be gone.)

Test Retakes

Test retakes will be given for students who receive a D or F.  The scores of the two tests will be averaged, with the highest-grade possible of 75%.  Test retakes must be completed on the day offered unless previously arranged with the teacher.  Students may be required to come in for help before being allowed to retake the test.

Final

A comprehensive final will be given on the final day in January.

Absences:  Absences are strongly discouraged.  Although it will be required that you make up all work, time and participation in class cannot be made up.  Missed assignments are due within 2 class periods.  If you are present on the day of a test or quiz, you will be required to take the test or quiz.  Missed tests and quizzes must be made-up immediately upon return to class.  Unexcused absences result in a grade of 0 for all missed work.  I suggest that you find 3 people in the class from whom you can get the homework assignment and notes if you have to miss class.  Assignments will be available on the class website.  25 extra credit points will be given for perfect attendance.  5 points will be deducted for each absence.

Tardies:  A tardy occurs when you are not in your seat, ready to work when the bell rings.  2 points will be deducted from the attendance points for each tardy.  As per school policy,  3 tardies result in parent contact and late homework.  5 tardies result in a referral and Saturday school.  The LCC handbook contains the information on the tardy policy.

Leaving Class: Students will not be allowed to leave without a pass.  Each time a student leaves, he/she must use the orange card in the LCC handbook.  Three bathroom passes will be given each semester to be used in emergencies.  Two of the passes can be turned in at the end of the semester, each for 10 homework points of extra credit.

Help Outside of Class: My desire is that students get all the help necessary to be successful.  I will be available for help before school (about 7:15am) on most 1-3-5 days.  I can also be available most 1-3-5 days after school.  There is also help available at the LCC collaboration center after school and Wednesday evenings.  This information will be posted.

Note to Students: My goal for the year is to help you to learn and be successful, but you will need to take the first steps towards this goal.   Although this may not be easy, I believe that all of you can succeed, and wish this for all of you.   Please come to me with any questions that you have and join me in taking risks in order to learn.

Website:

The course Website can be accessed at http://teachers.sduhsd.k12.ca.us/svalverde and clicking on the page for MAT.  This site contains information about the course, contact information, information for use in class, a list of assignments by day, links to your grade, and links to other useful sites for students and parents.  Please note that we will be using the computers in class so each student will need to fill out an Acceptable Use Policy.  If you give me an email address on the form to return to me, I will email grade reports when they are updated.

Note to Parents:

I would like to see each of my students become successful and confident in this math class, and I am looking forward to working with you to make this happen.  As stated in this syllabus, the students will have homework everyday and it should be recorded on their assignment sheet.  Please encourage them to complete their homework as it is vital to their success on tests, quizzes, and in the class.  I plan to send home progress reports periodically and can also send these over email.  Grades will also be available on the web.  If possible, email is the most efficient way to reach me, but phone calls are always welcome.  Please come to me with questions or concerns.  Homework assignments and helpful links can be found on the web site listed below.
