Our Mission
Our mission is to support the Library Media Center in meeting the intellectual, curricular and leisure reading needs of the entire student body as well as staff at an exemplary level as defined by the California School Library Association through advocacy, fundraising, programs and activities.

Friends of the Library Activities

  • Provide staff support for extended library hours
  • Host special events, such as Cutting-Edge Conversations, the Barnes and Noble Book, agenda  and Rummage Sales with proceeds going to the library.
  • Purchase books for the LMC permanent collection
  • Purchase DVDs, CDs, study and art prints for student resource materials
  • Purchase online subscriptions

Goals for '08-'09
In the '08-'09 school year, the Torrey Pines LMC continues to focus on providing excellent online subscriptions accessible 24/7 at home and school.  Our goals are as follows:

  • Purchase of high-quality learning materials: The Library Media Teacher, in conjunction with teachers in the English Language Development program, special education and regular classroom teachers, School Site Council, department chairs and Friends of the Library, purchases high quality, appropriate and relevant resources.  Materials will be purchased across the curriculum content areas and with an emphasis placed upon high-interest content areas as well as for recreational reading.
  • Book selection is based on professional journal reviews, library and special subject associations, committee member contributions and teacher input. The focus this year is contemporary fiction, high interest for ELD, Sheltered Reading and Success Programs.
  • Bring special guests, exemplified through the Cutting-
    Edge Conversations
(CEC) to meet our students. Since 2005, these guests are "ordinary people doing extraordinary things."  The CEC guests offer a view of positively participating in our local and world communities. thus impacting the lives of others.
  • Promote the newly purchased resources during freshmen orientations, class presentations to upperclassmen, acquisition lists to teachers and exhibits.
  • Create an attractive, inviting and comfortable environment through exhibits, displays, special events and comfortable furniture.

Why Friends of the Library Needs You
Dramatic cuts in school funding make your contribution to the Library Media Center more important now than ever before.

  • Books per student: Our book collection is considerably below the  California School Library Association's Standards for School Libraries recommendation of 20 books per student. However, as of October 2008, we have 9 books per student and fall into the "at risk" category.
  • Curricular needs: Our Library Media teacher always works closely with teachers and students to provide the best quality materials for academic research and recreational reading.

Financial support from the Friends of the Library continues to be a critical component for our collection development.
