The Social Studies Department takes pride in its significant contribution to Torrey Pines reputation as a National Distinguished School, as well as its achievements on the STAR and Advanced placement exams. Since the inception of Torrey Pines High School, the members of this department have striven to meet the increasingly diverse academic needs of an expanding student population, while maintaining quality course offerings. We enjoy working with the students of this District and take pleasure in their accomplishments at all ability levels.
All courses taught in the Social Studies Department follow State Framework Guidelines for textbook and curriculum content. In addition, our Advanced Placement course offerings meet Educational Testing Service standards for academic achievement.
Beyond the required text assignments, supplementary reading sources are regularly employed to expand and challenge students' abilities to think and respond in written and oral communication. Students are also being introduced to on-line computer sources in each subject area through our expanding computer labs and in-class computer systems -- thanks to the the ongoing support of the TPines Booster Club, the TP Foundation and State funded technology grant awards.
Curriculum articulation occurs annually between Torrey Pines and its feeder schools, and regularly within the Social Studies Department -- including ongoing needs assessment for resource students mainstreamed in the social studies curriculum.
Unique features of the social studies curriculum include the annual "Salon" in AP European History, mock legislative assemblies in American Government, and Federal budget balancing simulations in Economics. Computer based technology is increasingly integrated into the curriculum. Also significant is the growth of the our AP program, especially in U.S. History. Over the past seven years the number of AP test takers in U.S. History alone has more than doubled, while the pass rate continues to exceed district, state and national averages. Offerings and success rates in AP Economics, Government, and European History also continue to grow.
